In the heart of the Arabian Peninsula, Saudi Arabia is in the throes of a profound transformation. Our recent visit to Riyadh for the Cityscape Global Conference left us in awe of the strides this kingdom has made since our last projects here in 2009. The contrast is staggering: back then, the local economy moved slower, innovation was less evident, and development progress was more measured. But in 2023, Saudi Arabia is a whole new world, and it's all part of the grand vision of Saudi 2030.
A Kingdom in Transformation
The Saudi Vision 2030 initiative has set in motion an astounding evolution that we could witness firsthand at the expo. Notably, projects in the futuristic city of NEOM are redefining the region from the ground up. Among these, "The Line" envisions a 170-kilometer urban utopia, while "Trojena," "Oxagon," and "Sindhala" promise to transform entire landscapes. These projects aim not just for economic growth but also to promote culture, art, heritage preservation, greenery, and livability, fostering a more human-centric approach to urban development.
At DXMID, we participated in the NEOM competition in 2021. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we couldn't visit Saudi Arabia then. Returning to Riyadh in 2023, we were pleasantly surprised to see the dramatic progress made not only in economic development but also in fostering culture, art, preserving heritage, and enhancing the overall quality of life. This approach aligns perfectly with our vision for sustainable and innovative architecture and design.
DXMID's Unsolicited Visions
While no one has solicited DXMID for such projects in Saudi Arabia yet, we've taken it upon ourselves to envision not just 2030 but the next 100 years. Our Saudi Vision spans 2030, 2060, 2090, and 2120, each year representing a new milestone in architectural innovation and sustainability.
2030: Oasis of Sustainability
In 2030, we imagine a self-sustaining city oasis at the heart of Saudi Arabia. This oasis seamlessly blends greenery with advanced technology, setting new standards for urban living. Here, desert farms coexist harmoniously with innovative architecture, smart energy grids powered by renewable sources, rainwater harvesting mitigating water scarcity, and green mobility driven by electric vehicles.
2060: Hydrogen Mirage Heaven
Fast forward to 2060, and Saudi Arabia hosts a utopian hydrogen generation hub. In this vision, renewable energy, cutting-edge technology, and the desert's natural beauty unite in perfect harmony. Here, green hydrogen production becomes the nation's powerhouse, surrounded by desert flora, solar panels, wind turbines, and AI-powered water recycling. Visitors engage in sustainable tech tourism, gaining insights into the future of clean energy
2090: Skies of Infinite Knowledge
By 2090, we envision a towering research complex that pierces the sky, symbolizing Saudi Arabia's relentless pursuit of limitless knowledge. Sustainability and innovation underpin this architectural wonder, with a solar-panel-clad exterior generating clean power, vertical gardens purifying the air, and learning spaces inviting collaboration and innovation.
2120: The Ethereal Enclave Nexus
Our 2120 vision sees Saudi Arabia emerge as a celestial beacon of architectural innovation with the "Ethereal Enclave Nexus." This transparent wonder defies conventional notions of architecture. It seamlessly blends with the landscape while offering a captivating experience for its occupants. Quantum transparency technology renders the Enclave Nexus invisible at will. Its dynamic material adapts to surroundings, camouflaging the structure when needed. Solar-emissive exterior captures sunlight for power, air-purification systems refresh the atmosphere, and augmented reality offers immersive experiences. All powered by zero-point energy.
